Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia - animated gif

This is the time-lapse of the territorial evolution of the Serenissima, the republic of Venice, the longest lingering repubblic in all human history. The time is proportional to the real possession of the regions by Venice (1 year = 10 milliseconds). I'm enjoying animated gifs, did you notice? hehe

COMPARAZIONI GEOGRAFICHE 2

Tornando alla strana ipotesi di Comparazione Geografiche 1, che accadrebbe se di colpo le frontiere della Federazione Russa dovessero slittare sopra la nostra cara vecchia europa occidentale? L'estensione della Russia, si sa è insuperabile, quindi vederla tutta spaparazzata dalla Mauritania al Pakistan, passando per la Danimarca, l'Egitto e l'Irlanda puó essere piuttosto indicativo dell'estensione di questo stato.

Nel dettaglio la Mongolia sarebbe un regno baltico e la Cina occuperebbe le isole Britanniche e l'estremo nord del continente. Almeno il Khazakistan conserva delle zone che sono sue anche in una cartina normale!

Mr. CORK

Ve lo ricordate mr. Potato? era un giocattolo molto di moda che scatenava la fantasia dei bambini, sostanzialmente era una base a forma di patata a cui si potavano agganciare diversi gadgets che erano braccia, cappelli, occhi, nasi, tutto quello che poteva caratterizzare un personaggio.
i diversi tipi di elementi davano combinazioni infinite.
e se non infinite comunque un gran numero.

Ma un'altro gran numero riguardo al mr.Potato doveva essere il prezzo, ma anche se non fosse cosí, l'idea che qui voglio sottolineare è: la cosa che davvero attira del concetto mr.Potato è la possibilitá di mischiare elementi, creare personaggi personalizzati e stravaganti.
Ebbene, a casa mia avevo realizzato un esercito di personaggi simili: los Corchos de Arimon! e quando i miei nipotini erano venuti a trovarmi, sará per mancanza di altri giocattoli o chissá, ma comunque ne erano rimasti molto impressionati!

Perchè dunque non creare una linea di gadget da Corchos (Sugheri) per creare infinite varietá di personaggi?

i gadget potrebbero essere: nasi, occhi, orecchie, cappelli, capelli, braccia, gambe, ali, caschi, tentacoli, occhiali, maschere, armi, barbe, berretti, cinture, mantelli, etc etc ma l'importante è che siano tanti ed, essendo piccoli e in serie, costare mooooolto poco. La fantasia del bambino creerebbe un mondo con i Corcho-gadgets e sono sicuro che potrebbe diventare un gran gioco molto popolare che (in questi tempi di pochi soldi) potrebbe anche far abbastanza felici i genitori. Invece di andare a comprare le figurine si vanno a prendere una nuova mini serie di Corcho-gadgets!

Il vantaggio sarebbe dunque esponenziale, perchè oltre a risparmiare pecunia e a fornire un gioco infinito e di combinazione di volta in volta esponenziali, i genitori finirebbero per ber bottiglie di vino a raffica per far felici i bambini! e via cosi!!

COMPARAZIONI GEOGRAFICHE 1

qualche fanatico della geografia come me, volendo comparare le dimensioni reali degli stati (visto che spesso le estensioni delle varie regioni sono falsate dalla rappresentazione bidimensionale della mappa o dalla distanze tra loro) potrebbe chiedersi ad un certo punto come sarebbe l'Europa se, per un misterioro errore topografico, un giorno, di punto in bianco le frontiere degli stati slittassero a Nord, mantenendo esattamente le loro proporzioni (e i loro governi e popoli, perchè no!)

Uno slittamento a nord degli stati potrebbe questo risultato:

Si puó notare come l'Algeria sia diventata un'impero Atlantico quasi Celtico! La Libia potrebbe invece rappresentare a spanne il sogno di Hitler, mentre il Niger sarebbe un gran bello stato marittimo mediterraneo! Il Sudan controllerebbe il Mar Nero, l'Egeo e l'Anatolia, una specie di Impero Bizantino, insomma. al Sud Sudan toccherebbe la foce del Nilo. Il Ghana controllerebbe nord e sud dello stretto di Gibilterra, la Tunisia sarebbe un paese di fiordi e Vikinghi. Il Chad avrebbe l'Italia del Sud e gran parte dei Balcani, mentre all'Egitto toccano le steppe russe....

SKETCHES OF INDIA

The NEW book of the series "travelling-sketches-books-of-mine" has been created!
This time is the turn of my Indian drawing book called Sketches of India. I know the title is not that original, but at least it's quite clear the subject.

The standard version of the book is the cheaper one made in grey tones.
The black and white shades are not bad even if this time beside the usual ink drawings I wanted to give some colour touch to the black signs so sometimes I used things that I found on the road in order to give some visual tone to the compositions.
This made the original drawings become an interesting melting pot of ink, coffee, holy powders of Hindu temples, coca-cola, Indian tea, food sauces and so on.  An interesting experiment I have to admit.

If anyone of you would appreciate to have a copy of the book with colours there's a second version of the book, but it's quite expensive.

Most of the book is made with the scans of the trip diary (150 pages over 190) the rest is some small extra (including even the tale of a dream that I had during this adventurous travel).

personal kabalistic analysis of a hand

the power of the numbers and the symbolic meaning of the series of quantities and their hierarchy is nothing new in philosophy and religion. But I'm not a philosopher nor a religious man, so my own personal interpretations of the numbers that a hand can hold it's a naive symbolic approach that maybe can make someone smile.
That's exactely my porpose.

0 - zero is nothing ---> closed fist. NO. total negation of any possibility. aggressive enclosure. nowhere.
1 - one is the existence ---> YES. absolute positive certitude. one direction. here.
2 - two is the alternative ---> MAYBE. the choice to do. the junction between the opposites. there.
3 - three is the options ---> I DON'T KNOW. many possibilities in all directions. confusion. where?
4 - four is the spatial order ---> SURE. 4 cardinal point, 4 directions, all the space around is finally in order. clear orientation in an open space. anywhere.
5 - five is all ---> open hand. ALL. overcoming the limits of space. all the answers are in your hand. you openly have all the space and moreover the space beyond the horizon. outside and inside. everywhere.

Historical evolution of the idea of Africa

this is the graphic evolution of the concept of Africa from the European point of view through the history by means of a continuous cartographic overlapping. the result should be better if it were possible to add a longer sequence of historical maps ordered in a real chronological line.
the shape of this land is slowly changing and it's getting more and more defined, finally reaching the precision of the geographic atlases we are used to.
It's not just a question of drawings, it's the definition of a concept.

It could be interesting also to represent the evolution of the world map during the period of European explorations. but ok, this can give an idea at least.
